Homeward Bound 2.0
Showcased at The Hidden Door Arts Festival 2023, Edinburgh
Date: 31st May – 4th June 2023
Homeward Bound was selected as part of the visual art showcase at the Hidden Door Arts Festival 2023. The theme for the 2023 event was environments which sits perfectly with the central idea and intent behind my degree show installation. Having a chance to re-install and re-imagine the original piece in context to the former Scottish Widows Building was a truly exciting challenge.
The former Scottish Widows Building which has been home to banks and corporates, inspired visual forms that spoke of office residues – boxes, cables, uprooted carpets and loose pipes. I could almost imagine fragments of a deserted urban/corporate space and that is what began to inform and inspire my play with cardboard. Edinburgh being a new city challenged me in terms of procuring materials. This time round I was able to find two packaging companies that had a surplus of these perfectly cubed cardboard boxes which they were happy to contribute towards my project.
The final piece turned out to be a surreal dumpster like space with boxes neatly retaining their forms, but overflowing from various angles and contrasting with the twisted vine like formations made from fragments of the original installation. In keeping with the festival theme, I wanted my section to meld into the nearby environment which happened to a forest. The two areas became a complement in that cardboard eventually comes from the forest and with the integration of vine like structures in this space, it resembled a spectral urban forest.
